Mox 500 Capsule contains Amoxicillin, a penicillin-class antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including infections of the ear, nose, throat, chest, urinary tract, skin and teeth. It works only against bacteria — it has no effect on viral illnesses such as the common cold or flu.

Uses of Mox 500 Capsule

  • Ear, nose and throat infections (otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis)
  • Chest infections (bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia)
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections
  • Dental infections and abscesses
  • Part of combination therapy for H. pylori stomach infection

Benefits of Mox 500 Capsule

Clears bacterial infection: Mox 500 Capsule kills the bacteria causing the infection, so symptoms such as fever, pain and swelling settle as the infection resolves — most people start feeling better within 2 to 3 days, though the full course is still essential.

Side effects of Mox 500 Capsule

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea and skin rash.

  • Seek emergency help for signs of a severe allergic reaction: hives, swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.
  • Contact a doctor for severe or persistent watery diarrhoea during or after the course (possible C. difficile infection), or for white patches in the mouth (thrush).

How to use Mox 500 Capsule

  • Take it at evenly spaced times, exactly as prescribed (usually every 8 or 12 hours).
  • It can be taken with or without food; taking it with food reduces stomach upset.
  • Complete the full course even if you feel better after a few days — stopping early lets the infection return and breeds antibiotic resistance.

How Mox 500 Capsule works

Mox 500 Capsule is bactericidal: it binds to penicillin-binding proteins and blocks the construction of the bacterial cell wall. Without an intact wall the bacteria burst and die, clearing the infection.

What if you miss or exceed a dose?

If you miss a dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember, then continue with evenly spaced doses. If it is nearly time for the next dose, skip the missed one — do not take a double dose.

In case of overdose

Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and, rarely, kidney effects (crystals in the urine). Drink water and seek medical advice if a significant overdose is suspected.

Safety advice

AlcoholUse with caution

No direct interaction, but alcohol can worsen nausea and slow recovery — best avoided during treatment.

PregnancySafe

Generally considered safe in pregnancy when prescribed by a doctor.

BreastfeedingSafe

Considered compatible with breastfeeding; watch the baby for loose stools or rash.

DrivingSafe

Does not usually affect the ability to drive.

KidneyUse with caution

Dose or dosing interval may need adjustment in significant kidney disease.

LiverSafe

No routine dose change needed; tell your doctor about existing liver disease.

Quick tips

  • Never use leftover antibiotics or share them — the wrong antibiotic makes future infections harder to treat.
  • Tell your doctor before starting if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotic.
  • Taking a probiotic or curd/yoghurt may ease mild antibiotic-associated diarrhoea; ask your pharmacist.
  • If there is no improvement after 3 days, go back to your doctor.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Allopurinol: increases the chance of skin rash.
  • Methotrexate: Mox 500 Capsule can raise methotrexate levels and toxicity.
  • Warfarin: may enhance the blood-thinning effect; INR monitoring advised.
  • Probenecid: raises Mox 500 Capsule blood levels (sometimes used intentionally).
  • Oral typhoid vaccine: antibiotics can inactivate the live vaccine; separate them as advised.

Frequently asked questions

Why must I finish the full course?

Symptoms improve before all bacteria are killed. Stopping early lets the hardiest bacteria survive and multiply, so the infection can return in a harder-to-treat, resistant form.

Will Mox 500 Capsule cure a cold or the flu?

No. Colds and flu are caused by viruses, and antibiotics have no effect on viruses. Unnecessary use only adds side effects and fuels resistance.

I am allergic to penicillin — can I take Mox 500 Capsule?

No. Mox 500 Capsule contains Amoxicillin, which is a penicillin. Tell your doctor, who will choose an antibiotic from a different class.

Can I take it on an empty stomach?

Yes, it works with or without food, but taking it with a meal reduces nausea.
